Earlier this week, Citryll hosted an educational webinar bringing together leading scientific and clinical experts to discuss the evolving understanding of extracellular traps (ETs) and their emerging role in immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs).
The webinar explored the growing body of evidence supporting ETs as fundamental drivers of inflammation across multiple disease areas, as well as the opportunities and challenges associated with developing therapies that target this biology.

The Science
Dr. Venizelos Papayannopoulos of The Francis Crick Institute provided an overview of the rapidly evolving understanding of ET biology and its role in inflammatory disease. Once considered a niche area of research, ETs are now increasingly recognized as active drivers of disease pathology across multiple autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.
His presentation explored how advances in our understanding of ET formation, clearance and regulation are helping to uncover new opportunities for therapeutic intervention. Dr. Papayannopoulos also discussed how a growing understanding of ET biology could support more targeted and personalized approaches to treating ET-mediated disorders in the future.
The Clinical Need
Professor John Ingram of Cardiff University focused on the significant burden faced by patients living with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and other chronic inflammatory diseases. Despite important advances in treatment, many patients continue to experience inadequate disease control, highlighting the need for new therapeutic approaches.
His lecture highlighted the impact these diseases can have on patients’ quality of life and the importance of delivering therapies capable of bringing more meaningful and durable disease control.
The Opportunity
The webinar concluded with a panel discussion featuring Dr. Carmelo Carmona-Rivera, of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Rogier Thurlings of Radboud University Medical Center, Prof. John Ingram and Dr. Venizelos Papayannopoulos.
The panel explored why interest in ET biology has accelerated in recent years and what this could mean for the future of IMID treatment. Discussions focused on the growing evidence linking ETs to inflammation, how ET-targeted approaches differ from existing therapies, and the potential advantages of targeting a biological process involved across multiple inflammatory pathways.
A recurring theme throughout the conversation was the opportunity to address inflammation at an earlier stage, and the potential this may offer to improve outcomes for patients living with chronic inflammatory diseases.
Looking Ahead
The webinar underscored the growing scientific and clinical interest in ETs as a potential therapeutic target across a range of IMIDs. While further research is needed to translate these insights into clinical benefit, the discussions highlighted a shared belief among experts that addressing these fundamental upstream drivers of inflammation may help overcome some of the limitations associated with current treatment approaches.
As understanding of ET biology continues to advance, the field is opening new avenues for research, biomarker development and therapeutic innovation.
